Visited the Somenos Garry Oak Protected Area (SGOPA) today, adjacent to Ye’yumnuts, a Quw’utsun ancestral site. It was a beautiful day to see these gnarly oaks but I was saddened to read that 90-95% of Garry oak ecosystems have been lost. Just a week ago, the garden looked fresh in the morning light. Now everything in the garden and house looks and feels dirty, coated in the fine ash of forest fire smoke, against a sky still yellow and hazy. I feel like washing everything down, but of course it is our habits that need cleaning up more than our plants. The Provider bush beans in the front are still living up to their name and feeding us with enthusiasm even when we hide in the basement from heat and smoke.
